The bike is the start. Here’s how to choose the oil and protective equipment for the adventure ahead.
Petrol, two-stroke oil and protective equipment are bought separately and are not included with your Trail49.
01 / FUEL & TWO-STROKE OIL
MEASURE. MIX. THEN FILL.
The right oil. The right mix.
The Trail49 needs petrol premixed with suitable two-stroke engine oil. Choose oil intended for premix in an air-cooled petrol engine. Four-stroke oil and outboard-only oil are not substitutes.
Check compatibility before buying. The Trail49 manual specifies a 10:1 petrol-to-oil mix. Check that the oil maker supports this application and ratio; a generic 25:1 or 50:1 recipe is not the Trail49’s instruction. Ask us if you cannot confirm suitability.
Never run on petrol alone. Missing oil, too little oil or unsuitable oil can permanently damage the engine. An adult must mix and refuel outdoors with the engine off and cool.
The Amazon link opens oil search results, not a confirmed Trail49 oil recommendation. Use the manual’s table, a graduated oil measure and an approved petrol-mixing container. Buy petrol from a petrol station; confirm the fuel’s compatibility before the first fill.
02 / PROTECT EVERY RIDE
SMALL RIDER. PROPER KIT.
These are options to compare, not a one-size kit. Check the exact model, protection markings, sizing and seller before buying. If equipment does not fit correctly, choose another option with help from a motorcycle-equipment retailer.
01 / HELMET
HJC C10
Full-face motorcycle helmet
A motorcycle helmet with youth sizes in the range. HJC lists ECE 22.06 approval. The linked example is 3XS; measure first and choose the size that fits your rider.
Fit checkGet the fit checked by a motorcycle-helmet retailer. Fasten the strap on every ride. A bicycle helmet is not a substitute.
A smaller-fit goggle from 100%’s youth motocross range. Check that the frame and strap work with the rider’s chosen helmet and that the lens gives a clear view.
Fit checkUse suitable eye protection for the helmet design. These goggles are an option for a compatible motocross helmet, not an extra to force inside a closed full-face helmet.
Choose full-finger motorcycle gloves with a secure wrist closure and a palm that allows a firm grip. Check the manufacturer’s protection information and size chart.
Fit checkWith gloves on and the engine off, check that the rider can operate the throttle and both brake levers comfortably.
Purpose-made motocross boots. O’Neal lists EN 13634:2017 for this model. The linked example is EU 35 / UK 3; select the rider’s actual size and check the retailer’s chart.
Fit checkTry them with riding socks. Check comfortable ankle support, a secure closure, ground contact and reach to both lowered footrests.
Look for motorcycle-specific protection in the correct size for the chest, back, shoulders, elbows and knees. Check which areas and protection standards the exact item covers.
Fit checkA generic “armour” description is not enough. Check the manufacturer’s intended use and coverage, and try the equipment together.
Choose suitable motorcycle riding clothing that covers arms and legs and works with the protective equipment underneath. Check the manufacturer’s intended use and sizing.
Fit checkA matching jersey and trousers are not automatically impact protection. Secure loose fabric, laces and hair away from moving parts.
Product links may open a preselected size or colour. Always choose the correct size for the rider. “Browse” links open Amazon search results that can include unrelated items; use the guidance above to assess each listing. Prices, availability, delivery and returns are set by the retailer.
