Seat height is not a minimum inside-leg measurement. Seat shape, footwear and the rider’s reach also affect fit.

RIDER / GROUND REACH02 — INSIDE LEG

Can they reach the ground?

Measure their inside leg. Compare with our 58 cm seat.
Measure inside-leg length to help check ground reach from the 58 cm seatA tape measure beside the child shows the distance from the floor to the top of the inside leg. Compare this measurement with the bike’s 58 centimetre seat height as an initial guide, then check ground reach while seated on the actual bike. The child and tape are illustrative, not to scale. 02 / Why measure?

Feet down.
Bike steady.

This measurement helps you check whether their feet can reach the ground and steady the bike when seated.

  1. Riding footwear on. Stand upright on a level floor, feet slightly apart.
  2. Take a tape measure. Measure straight from the floor to the top of the inside leg. Note the length in cm.
  3. Compare with our 58 cm seat. Then check their reach on the actual bike, with the engine off.

58 cm is the seat height, not a minimum inside-leg length. Seat width and riding position affect fit too.

03 / More than a number

Reach it.
Control it.

  1. Right-hand twist throttle. Reach both grips comfortably. Turn the bars both ways and operate the throttle with the right hand and the brake levers without stretching.
  2. Feet on the ground. When seated, both feet should touch the ground and the rider should be able to support the bike.
  3. Feet on the footrests. With both folding footrests lowered, check that the rider can reach them comfortably in a balanced riding position.

Automatic, twist-and-go controls mean no manual gear changes. Learning to balance, control speed and brake still takes practice.

Not sure about the fit?

Email their height, inside-leg measurement in riding footwear and riding experience. We can help you understand the checks; final fit and control must be assessed on the actual bike.

Front and rear cable-operated disc brakes. No speed limiter is fitted. Packed weight is 22.2 kg, including packaging. Identify the fitted engine-stop control as described in the manual before starting. What to check before ordering.

Don’t choose by age alone.

Size, strength, coordination and judgement matter too. If unsure, ask a qualified off-road riding instructor to assess readiness before riding.

Protect every ride.

Adult supervision required whenever riding. Wear a properly fitted and fastened motorcycle helmet, eye protection, riding gloves, protective boots and suitable protective riding clothing. Kit them out

Choose the right space.

Ride only on suitable private land with the landowner’s permission, away from the public. Do not ride on public roads, pavements or public paths. Plan for the rider’s experience and available space.

Where can kids ride in the UK?
Before every rideSafety checklist

Read the Trail49 user manual before assembly, fuelling or riding. A responsible adult must check the bike, the rider and the riding area. If anything is unclear or may be unsafe, do not ride; contact us or a competent motorcycle technician.

  1. Check the bike with the engine off. Check tyre condition and pressure, wheels, fasteners, chain, guards and brakes using the manual’s instructions. Check that the throttle moves freely and returns when released. Do not ride with loose, damaged or missing parts, a sticking throttle, ineffective brakes or a fuel leak.
  2. Understand the controls before starting. The rider must be able to reach and operate both brake levers and understand the right-hand twist throttle. The supervising adult and rider must know the actual engine-stop control and the manual’s stopping procedure. Do not start if you cannot identify it. No speed limiter is fitted.
  3. Dress for the ride. Wear a properly fitted and fastened motorcycle helmet, eye protection, riding gloves, protective boots and suitable protective riding clothing. Secure loose clothing and hair away from moving parts. Protective equipment is not included with the bike.
  4. Choose suitable space and supervision. Adult supervision required whenever riding. Use suitable private land with the landowner’s permission, away from the public. Keep spectators, other children and animals clear. No public roads, pavements or public paths. Ride within the rider’s ability and available space; new riders need instruction and practice with balance, throttle control and braking. One rider only; no passengers.
  5. Hot engine and exhaust — burn risk. Keep hands, legs and clothing clear of hot engine and exhaust surfaces. Allow the engine and exhaust to cool before handling, maintenance or storage.
  6. Petrol — fire risk. A responsible adult must handle and mix fuel according to the manual. Refuel outdoors with the engine switched off and cool, away from smoking, flames and sparks. Secure the cap and deal with any spill before starting. Keep fuel out of children’s reach.
  7. Exhaust fumes — carbon-monoxide danger. Never start or run the engine indoors or in an enclosed space, including a garage or shed. Use outdoors, away from doors, windows and air intakes.

Rider & riding

Fit, controls and getting ready.

Is it right for my child?

Start with the 58 cm seat height, then check their reach, balance and ability to operate the controls. Our illustrated guide shows how to measure inside leg and what to check on the actual bike. No speed limiter is fitted. Age or one measurement alone does not establish suitability. The 80 kg maximum load is a weight limit, not a guarantee of fit. Explore the rider fit guide.

How easy is it to ride?

The controls are straightforward: automatic, twist and go, with no gears to change or clutch lever to operate. Once the engine is running, gently twisting the throttle makes the bike move. New riders still need practice with balance, throttle control and braking. Adult supervision and the protective equipment listed above are required whenever riding.

Before the first ride

Read the user manual, complete assembly and first-use checks, and make sure the supervising adult and rider understand the throttle, brakes and engine-stop control before starting. Prepare a suitable private riding area and the required protective equipment. Use the before-every-ride checklist each time you ride.

What petrol and two-stroke oil do I need?

Our recommended oil. Use Castrol POWER1 2T Motorcycle Oil, the one-litre two-stroke bottle. It is a part-synthetic motorcycle oil with API TC, JASO FD and ISO-L-EGD specifications. Four-stroke engine oil and outboard-only oil are not substitutes.

Measure, mix, then fill. Trail49 uses 10 parts petrol to 1 part oil: 1 litre of petrol plus 100 ml of Castrol POWER1 2T. The oil brand does not change that ratio. Use a graduated measure and mix thoroughly in a clean, approved petrol-mixing container before filling the tank. Do not guess by capfuls or copy another bike’s ratio.

Get ready for your first fill. Buy petrol from a petrol station and check its compatibility, including ethanol content. Our oil guide shows the exact Castrol bottle with a link to buy it on Amazon.co.uk, plus an interactive calculator and mixing table.

See our Castrol oil recommendation & mixing guide

Never run on petrol alone. No oil, too little oil or unsuitable oil can cause severe, potentially permanent engine damage. An adult must prepare the fuel and refuel outdoors with the engine switched off and cool, away from flames and sparks.
